Welcome to the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering (ESE) at Bangladesh University of Textiles (BUTEX).
We are a vibrant community of scholars where textile engineering guided by environmental science, environmental engineering with a major focus of environmental sustainability of whole textile supply chain.
The production of textile materials is associated with tremendous environmental pollution, mainly to the discharge of insufficiently treated wastewater and different types of solid wastes. Being aware of the burning environmental problem, the Government sees the need that the envisaged growth will only be achieved if also corresponding efforts are undertaken to better protect the environment as a whole and if the entire nation strives for “sustainable development”. Currently, many of the industries do not truly comply with existing social and environmental standards such as for occupational health and safety, use of sustainable raw materials, chemical management, minimization of water consumption, energy consumption, wastewater discharge to natural aquatic body, proper disposal of solid wastes and so on. Furthermore, the qualified enforcement of existing regulation as well as the proper implementation of techniques to minimize pollution at source (process optimization) as well as end-of-pipe (emission mitigation) requires well educated staff in top management level. We are trying to improve the education of BUTEX graduates with respect to environmental protection and sustainability along the entire textile value-added chain as well as with offering courses to improve the qualification of future managers in the factories. To meet these challenges BUTEX started this academic program from session 2018-2019 named as “B. Sc. in Textile Engineering (Environment)” from the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering (DoESE). The program has reflected huge opportunity that has opened up for textile graduates with specialized knowledge in environment in the national and international job markets.
Due to its multidisciplinary curriculum with wide-ranging courses, DoESE graduates will be able to avail higher study opportunity abroad in fields of Textile Engineering, environmental science and engineering; environmental policy and sustainable development; urban planning and environmental management; chemical and environmental engineering; natural resource management; ecology, toxicology; environmental and natural resource economics; environmental law or disaster management.
